The Geckos…

It is a decade now since Gaucín embraced an invasion of more than 400 decorated geckos. Salamanquesarte was a creative initiative launched by Gaucín’s Association of Tourism in the Spring of 2008. Resin geckos measuring 42 cms long were distributed to all school children, local artists and residents to decorate as they choose. The project hoped to unite the village and spurred on not a little competitiveness. It was fascinating to see the originality and ingenuity of the participants…

There were brides and superheroes, flamenco dancers and footballers…

Although some geckos were subsequently donated for sale by the Association, many still decorate the village streets and it is great fun seeing how many you can spot.

Despite their declining numbers, they are thought about with fondness.
